Luster Premium Home Whitening
I came across an advertisement for Luster Premium Home Whitening. Can you tell me if this is a safe product? The reviews seem positive and people noticed whitening fairly quickly. I just don’t want to get something that is dangerous.

Dear Leroy,

I’m glad you wrote. While there are over the counter whitening kits that do work, such as Crest Whitestrips, this is not one of them. Luster Premium appears to be fake. Instead of a legitimate teeth whitening ingredient, it uses a pigment in the so called “super whitener”, zinc oxide. This will stick to the teeth and make them look whiter, but only temporarily.
My guess is that the positive reviews came from people who noticed the whitening from the pigment and wrote the review before the effect wore off. The light they purport to help with the whitening does nothing. While not dangerous, it is a waste of your money.
Even those over-the-counter products that do work will not be nearly as strong what you can get from the dentist. This means that you will be purchasing many kits to match what you could do with one treatment with your dentist.
In the long run, you would get a better value from doing professional teeth whitening. Plus, you would have the added protection of a dentist keeping an eye on things, such as making sure none of your other dental work have gaps that could lead to irritation from the whitening gel. Plus, the custom fitted trays that you get from a dentist will protect your gums.
If all you are looking for is a whiter smile, than teeth whitening is an inexpensive way to remake your smile and make you look years younger. If, however, you want to change more about your smile than just the color, then porcelain veneers can remake anything you want about your smile. In addition to changing the color, it can change the shape, size, and character of your teeth all at the same time.
