Can You Put Off a Root Canal Treatment?
My dentist said that I needed a root canal treatment. The tooth isn’t actually hurting and I don’t remember it hurting. Can I put this off or do I need to do it right away?
Chris
Dear Chris,
Please bear in mind with this advice that I have not actually examined you. The best I can do is give general advice here. If the tooth is not hurting and has not been, then you are likely safe to put off the root canal treatment. Though, be aware that you risk what is known as external resorption. This is a condition where the infection eats away at the root of the tooth to the point that the tooth will no longer be saveable with a root canal treatment and you will have to replace the tooth. This doesn’t happen all the time but it is a risk you should at least be aware of.
On the other hand, If you have a pimple on your gums or if you start having pain, then that is a sign of an active infection and it will be important to deal with. I might not call it a dental emergency unless you are in a lot of pain, but you will want to get seen and get this treated sooner rather than later. People still die from neglected tooth infections.
Your oral health does have an impact on your general health. Once you do get the root canal treatment done, you will be delighted to discover that you actually feel a bit better in general.
